Kerala Weather Updates: At least 19 people have lost their lives and over 10,000 have been shifted to relief camps in Kerala as heavy monsoon rains lashed the southern state for over a week.

Though the intensity of the rains seems to be reducing, it continued to rain in some parts of the state on Saturday morning as well, leading to traffic jams and water-logging in low-lying areas. According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), a total of 19 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the southern state till today (July 8).

“There are 10,399 people in 227 relief camps opened across the state following heavy rains,” said an SDMA official.

As per the data, 1,100 houses have been partially damaged so far and other details of the damage are not yet available, the official said. As the intensity of rains lashing the state for the past few days eased, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the day in seven districts – Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed many areas of Kochi, Kozhikode and higher reaches of Idukki in the morning. Trees were uprooted on national highways on Kozhikode and Kannur-Thalassery road this morning, blocking traffic.

Traffic resumed at both the places after the fire service personnel cleared the way. Water-logging on roads affected normal life in Pathanamthitta and Tiruvalla areas.

Red alert indicates heavy to very heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm in 24 hours, while Orange alert means very heavy rainfall of 6 cm to 20 cm. Yellow alert means heavy rain between 6 to 11 cm.
