THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the test positivity rate (TPR) approaching 12%, the state government on Tuesday decided to continue with the lockdown restrictions for another week.

There were reports that the government is considering providing relaxation in local bodies with TPRs below 15% and even the weekend restrictions would be lifted. But since the TPR has risen above 11% in the last two days, the restrictions will continue.
The relaxations given for Bakrid will end on Tuesday night and the restrictions that were in place from Wednesday will come into force. The merchant organization and the state branch of the Indian Medical Association have been demanding opening of shops every day to decongest the crowd. They have been pointing out that the decision to allow shops to open in just three days has had a negative impact on the congestion in the shops.
There was a collective opinion in the review meeting that there should be no easing of restrictions, especially when the TPR is on the rise. Vijayan urged in the meeting that the district administration should take effective intervention to reduce the TPR.
He also urged the local self-government department to effectively implement micro-control in the local bodies having high TPR. He also clarified that facilities should be arranged for the plantation workers coming to Idukki from across the border to stay within the state to avoid daily travel for plantation.
The state reported 16,848 new COVID-19 Cases and 104 deaths in the last 24 hours take the active caseload to 1,26,398 and the respective death toll to 15,512 respectively. At the same time, with 12,052 new recoveries, the total number of people who have been cured has reached 30,45,310. Presently the TPR is 11.91 per cent. In the last 24 hours, 1,41,431 samples were tested for coronavirus and a total of 2,55,72,679 samples have been tested so far.
Of the new cases, 15,855 have been infected with local spread. The contact source of infection could not be traced in 783 people. Among the infected, 101 are health workers while 31 people have come from outside the state.
Malappuram reported the highest number of 2,752 cases, followed by Thrissur (1,929), Ernakulam (1,901), Kozhikode (1,689), Kollam (1,556), Palakkad (1,237), Kottayam (1,101), Thiruvananthapuram (1,055), Alappuzha (905). ) Huh. , Kannur (873), Kasaragod (643), Pathanamthitta (517), Wayanad 450 and Idukki (240).
The state has 83 local bodies with TPR below 5%, 384 with TPR 5%-10%, 362 with TPR between 10%-15% and 205 with TPR above 15%.
