Kerala: IMD issues orange alert for 11 districts, heavy rain forecast

Orange alert has been issued for all districts except Kannur and Kasaragod on October 21.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall for Kerala. On October 20, an orange alert has been issued for eleven districts- Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts.

Meteorologists have also put 12 districts of the state on orange alert on Thursday.

Orange alert has been issued for all districts except Kannur and Kasaragod on October 21.

Red alert indicates heavy to very heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm in 24 hours, while an orange alert indicates very heavy to very heavy rainfall of 6 cm to 20 cm. Yellow alert means heavy rain between 6 to 11 cms.

Kerala was devastated by heavy rains and subsequent landslides in south-central districts on October 15 and 16 resulting in the loss of 24 lives, with search and rescue operations still on.

Moreover, the dams in the state are at peak with red alert for more than ten major dams in the state.

Idukki, Idamalayar, Pamba and Kakki, out of the total 78 dams in the state, four major dams have been opened to release excess water.

Various district administrations have issued an alert to the people living downstream and shifted them to relief camps set up in the state.
