Kerala: Covid curbs likely to be lifted as cases come down | Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the pandemic situation improving in the state, the lockdown-like restrictions on Sundays is likely to be lifted. The decision is expected in the Covid review meet this week.
More relaxations are also expected in most of the districts as the cases have started coming down and also the number of hospitalization is also not increasing. The state has seen lockdown-like restrictions for the past three Sundays.
Colleges and schools are also set to start regular classes. Hence, experts point out there is no need for continuing with the restrictions any more. The colleges will be opening on Monday and the classes for Class I to IX will be coming from February 14. The classes for X, XI and XII will start from Monday.
However, a meeting is scheduled on Monday to decide whether the classes for Class I to IX should extend till evening. At present the classes are scheduled only till afternoon. For Class X to XII, there will be regular classes till evening from Monday onwards. If the same decision is taken for classes I to IX, then the online classes will be suspended.
More stringent restrictions have been imposed only in kollam district, which falls under category C. Theaters, malls, swimming pools and gyms have been allowed to open in all other districts. Meanwhile, restrictions are still in place for public functions, marriages and funerals. The government is likely to bring in more relaxations in these also. The expert committee had pointed out that the number of cases will start to come down from the second week of February.
Dip in new cases, TPR
The state on Sunday reported 26,729 cases from the 88,098 samples tested in the last 24 hours. The test positivity rate has come down to 30.34%. With 137 more deaths occurred in the past few days being recorded as due to Covid and 378 deaths added from the appeals received, the total deaths have become 58,255.
The total active cases are 3,29,348, of which 3% people are admitted to treatment centres. On Sunday, 49,261 patients recovered from the disease.
Of the cases reported in the day, 25,337 cases got infected through local contacts and the source of infection is not known for 1,083 cases. Among those who arrived from outside the state 119 tested positive and 190 healthcare workers also tested positive.
Ernakulam reported the highest number of cases – 3,989, followed by Thiruvananthapuram (3,564), Thrissur (2,554), Kottayam (2,529), Kollam (2,309), Kozhikode (2,071), Malappuram (1,639), Alappuzha (1,609), Kannur (1,442), Pathanamthitta (1,307), Palakkad (1,215), Idukki (1,213), Wayanad (825) and Kasaragod (463).
Currently, a total of 5,01,814 people are under observation across the state, of which 9,450 are in isolation at hospitals.
