THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed deep concern over the hardships faced by the students who are stranded in various parts of Ukraine. He has written in this regard to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also had discussion with Union external affairs minister S Jaishankar.
In his letter to Modi, the chief minister said he has been receiving several distress calls from the students. “Many of the people who have taken refuge in bunkers are going without food and water. They are in a thoroughly disturbed mental state,” he said.
The chief minister has urged both the PM and the external affairs minister to put pressure on the Russian authorities for evacuating the students by opening the boundaries of Russia.
“Those who have taken refuge in bunkers in places like Kyiv, Kharkiv and Sumi are in urgent need of food and water. They need urgent help for evacuation through Russia,” said the CM.
Similarly, a large number of students have walked to the Poland border braving freezing cold. Now, Ukraine officials are not allowing them to cross the border. There are reports that force is being used against them. Steps for sending officials from our embassy, ​​who can effectively communicate with the Ukraine officials at the border, may be taken immediately, Vijayan told the external affairs minister.
The chief minister also asked the Center to take steps for the opening of the route through Moldova. Jaishankar promised that all necessary facilities would be provided for the rescue mission.
