The Education Minister has directed the officials to complete the cleaning of school water tanks and wells by May 30. Schools in Kerala are re-opening on 1st June.

Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty has said that admission to class 11 in the state is expected to begin in June, while the session will begin in July. He made this announcement during a meeting with district education officers on Friday, reports Career360. The meeting was held in view of schools reopening in Kerala on June 1.

The Education Minister has directed the officials to complete the cleaning of the school water tanks as well as the wells by May 30. He has also directed them to seek help from the Parents Teachers Association. School offices should function by 5 pm and headmasters should ensure that all landlines are working, the minister ordered.

Further in the meeting, the General Education Minister said that on May 25, textbooks will be duly distributed to the schools. Text books will be available till May 27 at all district hubs. Giving an update on the developments, the Education Minister said that 82 per cent textbooks have been printed so far.

The minister is said to be working with local self-government departments to increase the number of schools serving breakfast and lunch under the mid-day meal scheme. There are about 2,400 schools out of 12,037 schools which are currently serving breakfast along with the mid-day meal scheme.

During the meeting, the minister also informed that the state government is preparing a proposal regarding cost escalation in the mid-day meal scheme. Sivankutty insisted that the education department has made necessary payments to mid-day meal cooks and helpers till February this year. Partial honorarium for the month of March has also been issued. School principals and mid-day meal workers staged a protest in March against the Kerala government not releasing funds on time.

V Sivankutty has directed all state education officers to ensure that the files are processed quickly to meet the basic needs of the people. “I have realized from the complaints I have been receiving that most of the education offices suffer from corruption and delays. Many files are stuck in AEO, DEO, DD offices. The files are not transferred due to petty reasons so fundamental Rights are denied. The minister said that the officers found involved in such activities would be punished severely.
