Kerala: Case registered against Muslim League leaders, activists for violating Kovid protocol during protest

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders and members of the Kozhikode Police have alleged violation of COVID-19 protocol and obstructing traffic during their protest held on December 9 at Kozhikode beach against the handing over of Waqf Board appointments in Kerala. A case has been registered against party workers. Public Service Commission (PSC). Police has registered a case against 10,000 workers including politicians.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had earlier held talks with Muslim body ‘Samastha’ and said it would be implemented only after detailed discussions and till a final decision was taken, the current situation would prevail. After discussion with the Chief Minister, ‘Samast’ decided not to participate in the dharna on 9 December.

Leader of the Opposition VD Satishan had said that there should be a recruitment board for the Waqf Board like the Devaswom Recruitment Board.

Vijayan on Thursday hit out at IUML and said it should “decide whether it is a political party or a religious organisation”. Vijayan further questioned whether the IUML has full rights over the Muslim community.

“Does the League have full authority over the Muslim community? Are there not Muslims who stand with us. At times, as part of communalism, the Sangh Parivar attacks Malappuram. See votes in Malappuram in the last election. Graph of LDF Has gone up a lot. Only a small difference when comparing with the UDF graph. The same change is happening. If you come to say that you have full rights over a community, we will not accept it.

He also said that no one is considering the league’s approval.
