Surendran accused the Kerala government of sabotaging the autonomy of state universities and demanded a judicial inquiry into university appointments over the past six years.

In a letter to Vijayan, the Kerala Governor advised the CM to amend the Universities Acts.
“My advice to you is to amend the Acts of the Universities and take up the position of Chancellor personally, so that you can fulfill your political objectives without dependence on the Governor. Once the Universities come under the direct control of the Government. There will be no scope for anyone to level allegations of political interference,” the governor wrote in his four-page letter.
Expressing his intention to vacate the post, the Governor advised the Chief Minister: “You can ask the Advocate General to prepare a legal document through which the Governor can transfer the powers of the Vice-Chancellor to the Chief Minister. It should not be. It is difficult for the Advocate General to find a legal way to do so.”
“As the vice-chancellor, it has become impossible for me to protect universities from constant political interference and erosion of their autonomy,” he said.
