Karnataka to get its first National Midwifery Training Institute

Karnataka is set to set up its first National Midwifery Training Institute (NMTI) at the state-run Vani Vilas Women and Children Hospital in Bengaluru. The initiative has been taken as a public-private partnership between the central and state governments, UNICEF and Bengaluru-based Aastrika Foundation.

Poor health services and untrained support during labor lead to unexpected maternal and child deaths, so a safe and healthy delivery requires knowledgeable and trained midwives. As midwife is known as a frontline worker who is specially trained for pregnancy, childbirth and well being of a mother and newborn baby, they need to be properly trained and have knowledge of latest techniques need to be kept.

According to media reports, the institute will provide training to midwifery teachers who will further train nurses and other midwives in the state. The report claims that the training will be facilitated by international midwives.

The news portal report also states that Karnataka is said to have the highest maternal mortality ratio in the southern India With 83 maternal deaths per lakh live births. The startling statistics indicated the need for a midwifery training institute.

Mital Rusadiya, head of UNICEF’s field office for Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, told The New Indian Express that midwifery is a proven, globally acclaimed intervention that can prevent 83 per cent of all maternal and neonatal deaths. “This initiative has promoted respectful maternal care and natural birth, reducing the need for C-sections,” said Meitel Rusadiya.
