Images of policemen wearing saffron shirts, stole and white ‘panch’ (dhoti) on Dussehra at Kapu police station in Udupi district and Vijayapura rural district of Karnataka have sparked a controversy, where Congress leader Siddaramaiah asked Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to wear his uniform. Have questioned. Changed.

In a series of tweets, Siddaramaiah questioned the state government over law and order. “Why not even hand him a trident and order violence? Your dream of Jungle Raj will be fulfilled then… On one hand the police is harassing innocent people in the name of law and order, on the other hand MLAs enter the police station and release the accused, where is the law and order? People should stay locked in their homes to stay safe. If you can’t give fair administration, why can’t you save democracy by resigning?

Siddaramaiah even asked CM Bommai if he plans to “dissolve the police department and hand over law and order to the RSS”? Bommai replied, “RSS is the biggest nation-building organization which, unlike your selective appeasement for votes, treats every citizen equally… The work of my government and my party is in accordance with the Constitution of India, nor That according to non-constitutional bodies like NAC.”

Udupi BJP MLA Raghupati Bhat asked Siddaramaiah why he was afraid of “saffron”. “Saffron stands for sacrifice. We have been worshiping saffron in this country since ancient times. Siddaramaiah is asking for victory over minorities and saffron symbol with violence. Where he wore saffron clothes during the festival, he joined the police force. He protested, while he was wearing Tipu Sultan’s cap and carrying a sword. Did he not have a sense of unity and integrity? If the police wear saffron, what is the problem with them?” asked Bhat.
