Karnataka: Mystery over death of sandalwood thief in Mandya district Mysuru News – Times of India

Mandya: Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will investigate the alleged death of a sandalwood thief whose body was found in a canal eight days after it was taken into custody by forest officials.

He was reportedly apprehended on October 8 by a team of forest officials patrolling the area. But he reportedly managed to escape when they were looking for a motorcycle which they had hidden in a sugarcane field before committing the crime.
Later, forest officials registered a case under section 224 (resistance against legal apprehension) of IPC at Chanaraipatna police station. They filed the complaint on October 14, the day the victim’s body was found in the canal, leading to speculation that Ravi was tortured by forest officials.
Mandya SP Ashwini Said that since there is an allegation of custodial death, the matter has been handed over to the CID for further investigation as per rules.
