Karnataka Mahila Congress Asks Party to Give at Least 30 Tickets for Women in Assembly Polls

Amarnath said that a large number of women can get tickets to contest elections only by bringing women’s reservation, there is a need to rise above the party line and fight for it.

The Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress on Thursday urged the party to give at least 30 tickets to women in the upcoming assembly elections.

Mahila Congress President Pushpa Amarnath said, ‘109 applications have come for tickets, women have applied for tickets in about 74 assembly constituencies. Successful candidates are being searched. Along with women MLAs, I recently attended the party’s election meeting in Belagavi, where I requested to give tickets to at least 30 women.”

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, he said that winnability would be the criteria for ticket distribution.

“But, getting so many applications from women is a revolution in itself, there is awareness to ask for tickets, it is a good sign,” she added.

Elections to the 224-member Karnataka Assembly will be held by May.

Of the eleven women members in the current assembly, six are from the Congress, three from the BJP, one from the JD(S) and one is nominated.

The women Congress legislators are- Laxmi Hebbalkar (Belgaum Rural), Kaneez Fatima (Gulbarga North), Roopakala M (KGF), Anjali Nimbalkar (Khanapur), Soumya Reddy (Jayanagar), and Kusumavati Shivalli (Kundagol).

Amarnath said that only by bringing women’s reservation, a large number of women can get tickets to contest elections, there is a need to rise above the party line and fight for it.

She said that only through the Women’s Reservation Act, women can get adequate number of tickets and representation. The BJP which has majority should pass this bill.

“Our leader Rahul Gandhi And the leadership has already declared that the Women’s Reservation Bill will be passed and implemented in case the Congress gets an absolute majority and comes to power.

State Congress president DK Shivakumarhad recently said the party was planning a separate manifesto for women ahead of the elections, and wanted to issue a “guarantee letter” expressing the Congress’ commitment to them.

Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is scheduled to address a women’s convention here on January 16, aimed at boosting support for women ahead of the assembly elections in Karnataka.
