Hubli: Karnataka, which won 25. have chosen MPsHighest, lowest recorded for BJP in South India electrification of railway line as compared to other southern states. The South Western Railway (SWR) has 3,037 Route Kilometers (RKM) in Karnataka. Out of its total 3,603 route kilometer, SWR Only 40.13% electrification has been registered till December 31, 2021. It is ranked 17th out of 18 railway zones in the country. Goa, of which SWR has 189 RKM, is yet to be electrified.
According to a document issued by Indian railway On its website on January 17, Karnataka was ranked 23rd in electrification, with 42.49% of the rail route electrified. Telangana is 11th with 88.68% electrification, Andhra Pradesh 13th with 85.62%, Kerala 14th with 81.82% and Tamil Nadu 16th with 75.44%. The national average electrification rate as on December 31, 2021 is 73.9%.
Arun Javagal, a Kannada activist from Bengaluru, said that Mysore was the first princely state in the country to have a railway organization and thousands of kilometers of railway lines were laid. “This organization was merged with the Indian Railways in 1950 and since then there is step-treatment in railway facilities in Karnataka. In the present scenario all our 28 MPs have failed to ensure electrification of the railway line.
Sunil Kulkarni, President, Kalyan Karnataka Grahakra Vedike stressed on the need to incorporate electrification from the DPR stage while constructing a new line or line doubling to reduce the cost.
However, Krishna Prasad KN, member of Karnataka Railway Vedike, Bengaluru, termed it a progress as the electrification in the state was just 17% five years ago. “We have seen a growth of 25% in five years. In addition, the office of the Chief Project Director, Railway Electrification was established a year ago in Bengaluru. Hence, we expect 100% electrification in Karnataka by the end of 2023, as assured by the Ministry of Railways,” he said.
34% jump in electrification
From 208 RKM in 2016, 5% of the SWR network, electrified track has now grown to about 1,400 RKM, i.e. 34%. Railway electrification work is currently in full swing and is being executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, Power Grid Corporation Limited, the Central Organization for Railway Electrification and Construction Wing of South Western Railway. With more than 1168 RKM electrified, SWR registers the highest ever figure in electrification in the last 16 months. So far electrification of 232 RKM has been completed in the current financial year. A total electrification target of 600 RKM has been set by March 2022. By December 2023, all major routes of the SWR will be electrified.
