Karnataka Legislative Council Speaker terminates ties with JD(S) to join BJP

Karnataka Legislative Council Speaker Basavaraj Horatti on Sunday said he would join the BJP and likely be its candidate for the upcoming MLC elections from the West Teachers’ constituency. Horatti, who has been elected MLC for seven consecutive terms since 1980, has severed his ties with the JD(S).

Horati said, “.. time to join (BJP), don’t know when… All (BJP) leaders told me, I have also accepted it. They nominated me for this constituency.” has not been announced.” Talking to reporters, he said that JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy also said that he has no objection to Horati’s decision.

“I am still the president, I will join BJP before filing nomination after elections are declared… All leaders including Chief Minister (Basavaraj Bommai) and Yediyurappa (BJP leader) have agreed. Yediyurappa gave me tomorrow. Called (Saturday) and said JP Nadda (BJP national president) agreed, things are almost final.” Considered the most senior MLC, Horatti was seen as the leading face of the JD(S) from North Karnataka.

He had been the education minister of the state, and was elected as the chairman of the Legislative Council in February 2021. The MLC elections from graduates and teachers’ constituencies are expected to be held in June or July.
