Mysore: Recently Published Integrated District Information System for Education The (UDISE+ 2019-20) report states that government schools have performed better in providing medical checkups to students than private schools.
The report is based on the medical checkup done in the previous academic year.
According to the report, out of 49,834 government schools, medical checkup of students was done in 49,522 schools i.e. 99.37% of the schools. In contrast, out of 20,069 private unaided schools, medical examination was conducted in only 15,006 (74.77%) schools.
According to government school teachers, these medical checkups help students in many ways. “If students are found sick or suffering from any problem, it is recommended to take them to the taluk/district hospital for treatment. These students are also offered free treatment by the government,” explained a teacher.
Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) chairman Antony Sebastian said private schools should also organize medical camps for students, though it is not mandatory.
Associated Management of Primary And D Sasikumar, general secretary of secondary schools, said most of the private schools are doing the exercise. “Medical camps are not organized in some schools where parents are against such practice citing several reasons,” he explained.
“One of the best solutions is to integrate the health records of the students with the Student Tracking System (STS). This will also include the immunization status of the students.
