Mysore: Armed robbery at a jewelery shop in the bustling Mysore area on Monday evening took a serious turn when a gang of four shot at a youth, killing him on the spot. . Police said it was not clear why the gang, who was fleeing with the loot, opened fire on 23-year-old Chandru, a mason.
The robbers entered the shop at Vidyaranyapuram in Mysore around 5.15 pm. They knocked down the shutters and tied up Dharmendra, the owner of the shop. It is believed that around this time, Chandru along with one of his relatives had come to buy earstuds and stood outside. At around 5.30 pm, when a relative of the shopkeeper closed the shutter, the gang came out with the looted goods. Suddenly while camping, one of them shot Chandru, causing him to fall. The brutal murder shook dozens of shopkeepers. Preliminary investigation revealed that only one bullet was fired. The police have released the CCTV footage of the attackers and sought the help of the people to nab them.
Police Commissioner Chandragupta said it was not yet established who instigated the gang to open fire. He said the robbers fled with the jewelery and the extent of damage was yet to be ascertained. The CCTV footage shows that the four were coming on foot and the police are probing whether they had brought any vehicle and parked it somewhere else. The four robbers were wearing blue T-shirts and their masks stretched to the chin.
Chandru, a resident of Dadadahalli, came to the shop with Rajith to buy studs and waited outside thinking that it was open now. “It was over in a matter of minutes,” said a grieving Rajith. We were just waiting when someone came and started knocking on the shutter of the shop and asked to open the shop. He said as soon as he tried to lift the shutter, the robbers panicked and started running. “I took Chandru to two private hospitals and then to the government-run KR Hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” Rajith said.
