Karnataka bypolls: 19 in fray for Sindgi, Hangal constituencies

Election officials said on Wednesday that a total of 19 candidates are in the fray for the by-elections to be held on October 30 in Sindgi and Hangal assembly constituencies. With today being the last day for withdrawal of nominations, two from Sindgi and four from Hangal withdrew their nominations, leaving six and thirteen candidates in the fray from both the constituencies respectively.

Two candidates from Sindgi are women. The counting of votes will take place on November 2.

The bypolls have become necessary as seats are vacant after the death of Sindgi JD(S) MLA MC Managuli and BJP’s CM Udasi from Hangal. Ramesh Bhushanur, who came second after Managuli in the 2018 elections, is the BJP candidate from Sindgi, while Shivraj Sajjanar is its candidate from Hangal constituency.

Congress has fielded Managuli’s son Ashok Managuli as its candidate from Sindgi, while former MLC Srinivas Mane is its candidate from Hangal. JD(S), which was the first to announce its candidates, has fielded 33-year-old post graduate Nazia Shakeel Ahmed Angadi from Sindgi and 35-year-old BE, M.Tech (CSE) graduate Niyaz Sheikh from Hangal.

This is the first election challenge for Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai after taking over. Maintaining Hangal is even more important for him as it is a neighboring constituency of his Shiggaon assembly constituency. The Congress, by ensuring a victory, wants to speed up its preparations for the 2023 Assembly elections in the state, while the JD(S) wants to retain the Sindgi seat thus proving that it still has a support base. . Northern District.

Congress leaders have alleged that the JD(S) has deliberately fielded minority candidates for the Hangal and Sindagi bypolls to help the BJP.
