Navratri is an auspicious nine-day festival dedicated to the nine forms of Goddess Durga and one of the important rituals of this festival is Kanya Pujan. Little girls are worshiped during Navratri as it is believed that Goddess Durga resides in them. According to legends, Goddess Durga had incarnated as a young girl to defeat the demon Kalasur. Therefore, little girls are worshiped as they are considered to be the universal creative force. Kanya Puja or Kanjak Puja is mainly performed on the eighth or ninth day of Navratri where nine girls are worshiped as the nine forms of Goddess Durga i.e. Navadurga.
KANYA PUJA VIDHI AND SIGNIFICANCE
Devotees welcome the girls to their homes and wash their feet and make them sit on a pedestal. After this a sacred thread called Kalava is tied around his wrist and red kumkum is applied on his forehead. They are offered a special bhog consisting of puri, black gram, coconut and pudding. After the feast, devotees give gifts like red dupatta, new clothes, bangles and money. The ritual of Kanya Puja is concluded by touching the feet of little girls and taking their blessings.
Kanya Puja is an important ritual of Navratri. According to Devi Bhagavata Purana, it is believed that by worshiping girls on the ninth day of Navratri, the devotees get the real fruit of the prayer. Those who observe a fast for nine days are asked to worship the girl, especially at the end of Navratri.
It is also believed that worshiping one girl brings good fortune, two girls get knowledge and salvation, while worshiping three girls gives virtue. Worshiping 4 and 5 girls bestows a person with authority and knowledge respectively, while worshiping nine girls is considered a blessing of supremacy.
