Army Radio reported that the fire started in the early hours of Saturday afternoon and preliminary assessment suggested that the fire started during maintenance work, which was going on on the second floor.

Seven people, including a police officer, were injured in a massive evacuation of shoppers by Israel Police officers and Israel Fire and Rescue Services amid ongoing efforts to extinguish the fire.

The top floor of the building collapsed after an hour, raising fears that the ground floor would do the same, and as a result, firefighters took precautions and focused only on extinguishing the outdoor flames.

However, they later destroyed the entire structure in an attempt to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to the gas canisters placed on the first floor.
