Judges held for ‘death threats’ over 2 hijab verdict | India News – Times of India

CHENNAI/BENGALURU: Tamil Nadu Police on Saturday arrested two persons for threatening to kill judges of the Karnataka High Court.hijab verdict’ Upheld the ban on students wearing Islamic headscarves to class on 15 March.
Kovai Rahmatullah was arrested in Tirunelveli, while 44-year-old S Jamal Mohammed Usmani was detained in Thanjavur.
A three-judge bench of the Karnataka HC, in its judgment, held that hijab is not a compulsory practice of Islam and boycott of headscarf comes under reasonable restrictions. The court also upheld the Karnataka government’s order on February 5, asking students to follow the uniform mandated by educational institutions.
Several religious minority community organizations are protesting across Tamil Nadu against the Karnataka HC decision. A video clip of one such protest meeting in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai on Thursday went viral on social media two days later. It shows Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaat (TNTJ) auditing committee member Kovai Rahmatullah allegedly saying that the judge who gave the ‘wrong’ verdict was killed during a morning walk in Jharkhand.
“There are some sentimental people in our community,” he said, threatening the judges indirectly. “If something happens to him (Karnataka HC judge), BJP is waiting for an opportunity to blame us.”
Police registered a case against two more people, TNTJ Madurai district president Habibullah and vice-president Asan Badshah, who organized the meeting.
In Thanjavur, police on Friday arrested TNTJ Headquarters President S Jamal Mohd Usmani and accused Thanjavur district leader Rajik Mohamed of the outfit’s abusive action against Karnataka HC judges, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Filed a case for comment.
