Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation lawsuit: Jury members question title in letter op-ed

People are watching the ongoing defamation lawsuit between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard. With explosive testimony from both sides, the trial, which stands at its final point and awaits verdict, is currently being deliberated by the jury. In a recent update, jurors — in their first full day of deliberations Tuesday — asked the judge a question about how they should weigh the headline of Heard’s 2018 Washington Post op-ed. The op-ed plays a significant role as Depp is suing Heard for $50 million, claiming that his article was defamatory and further affected his career.

As Deadline reports, Judge Azcarte said jurors were wondering whether they should consider the title defamatory or whether it should be linked to the content of the statement. The December 2018 article headline read: “I spoke out against sexual violence—and faced the wrath of our culture. That has to change”

On jury decision forms, the title is one of three statements that jurors have to weigh before deciding to rule for Depp. The other two statements are “Then two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of my culture’s wrath for women who speak up” and “I have a real-time view.” was the vantage point of how institutions protect men accused of abuse.” Whether or not the statements made in Hurd’s op-ed are defamatory are also for jurors to decide.

Although in the lawsuit, Heard’s legal team stated that Depp was not mentioned anywhere in the article or title, the latter’s legal team argued that it was clear to readers who his ex-wife was referring to when he Had claimed to be a domestic violence survivor. Hurd has also stated several times during her testimony that she wrote the op-ed for the actor because she wanted the world to know what she did.

Amid the trial, Depp was seen performing at Jeff Beck’s concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where he received a standing ovation from the audience, a moment that has gone viral on social media.

Back in 2020, Beck and Depp sang a cover of John Lennon’s separation.
