England Test captain Joe Root’s grandfather Don Root has slammed The Hundred, which had its inaugural edition in July-August this year. In a letter to The CricketAer Magazine published on Friday, Root compared the 100-ball tournament to the COVID-19 virus.

“The Hundred is among us. So is COVID and it’s welcome. We are constantly being lectured about the need to spread the gospel and attract more money to nurture cricket’s grassroots,” Root wrote.

He also said that the hundred caused England’s downfall in Test cricket.

“Obviously this can only be done by increasing some form of the white-ball version of the game. At what cost to the red-ball version? Further down and down will seem to be the new ECB mantra. The consequences of this policy will be seen in the Test series.” can go.”

Root said there is currently a disparity between red and white-ball cricket in the country. “Of course, every sport requires good financial resources, but do we have a balance between financial needs and on-field performance at the moment? As far as red ball cricket is concerned, I don’t think so.

In the Test series against India, Root had an exceptional series as a batsman. He scored 564 runs at an average of 94 and scored three centuries, becoming the only batsman for his side to reach the three-figure mark. Root is also the highest run-scorer in Test cricket this year, scoring 1455 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 66.13.
