Joe Root steps down as England Test captain after Ashes, West Indies setback

England captain Joe Root has resigned as the Test captain of England with immediate effect. This decision has come after losing in the Ashes and West Indies tour. Nonetheless, he continues to lead the way in winning the most matches as England’s men’s Test captain. His 27 victories put him ahead of Michael Vaughan (26), Sir Alastair Cook and Sir Andrew Strauss (24 each).

After being appointed as Cook’s successor in 2017, Root led several famous series victories, including a 4-1 home series win over India in 2018 and a 3-1 win over South Africa in 2020. In 2018 he became. The first England men’s captain to win a Test series in Sri Lanka since 2001, he repeated a feat in 2021 with a 2–0 victory in Sri Lanka.

He is already England’s second-highest Test run-scorer behind Cook and has scored 14 centuries as captain. His 5,295 runs as captain is the most by any England captain and he is ranked 5th on the all-time list behind only Graeme Smith, Allan Border, Ricky Ponting and Virat Kohli.

Root’s decision comes after a 1-0 Test series loss to the West Indies and a 4-0 Ashes loss to Australia last month.

“After returning from the Caribbean tour and having had time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England’s men’s Test captain,” Root said.

“This has been the most challenging decision in my career, but after discussing it with my family and those closest to me, I know the time is right.

“I am very proud to have captained my country and I will look back on the last five years with great pride. It’s an honor to do this job and have been a mentor to someone who is at the pinnacle of English cricket.”

Root, 31, holds the record for most wins as England’s Test captain, 27 putting him one ahead of Michael Vaughan and three ahead of Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss.

But the last 12 months have been disappointing. After winning their opening three Tests in 2021, England have won only one, losing 11 and drawing five of their last 17.

ECB chief executive Tom Harrison said: “Joe has been an exceptional role model during his tenure, continuing to excel through his individual performances while balancing the demands of Test captaincy.

“He has led by example, and this has resulted in more Test wins than any other England captain, as well as several famous series home and away victories.”
