The JNU Teachers Association and several student organizations have raised the demand to replace the firm.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Tuesday said it has renewed the contract of Cyclops Security – a firm whose employees have been accused of misguiding student protesters and committing theft on campus.

The JNU Teachers Association and several student organizations have raised the demand to replace the firm.

“This is for the information of all that the new security service contract with Cyclops Security will commence on 01.02.2023 at 0700 hrs,” the JNU administration said in a statement.

“All the new civilian security guards will take over the duties from ex-servicemen officers security guards. Hence all residents of JNU are requested to cooperate with the new security guards.”

The administration said that security is the collective responsibility of all residents and their active co-operation with the security staff is necessary for a secure campus.

Several incidents of theft have been reported in the campus in recent years. JNUTA also highlighted the issue of increasing incidents of piracy in a statement last year.

In a statement in March last year, JNUTA had said, “Cyclops Security and Allied Services Pvt Ltd should be held accountable for the services for which they were hired.”

Cyclops Security has been in charge of JNU’s security since the time of the previous Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar. However, despite the many burglaries, the security firm has not been dismissed.

Following the 2020 campus clashes, the security agency was accused of colluding with the ABVP after they entered the university campus and attacked staff and students.

On 5 January 2020, masked men armed with rods and sticks attacked several students and teachers and injured hundreds. After the incident, Jagdish Kumar had said that the administration is in the process of appointing a new security agency.
