JNU Collaborates With NCHMCT, Students of Hospitality Institutes to Get Degree from Varsity

From the academic year 2023-24, students enrolled in UG and PG courses in hospitality in various institutes under National Council of Hotel Management Catering technology (NCHMCT) will be awarded degrees from JNU after completing their programme, officials said on Thursday.

NCHMCT, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Tourism, and JNU, a Central University, have entered into an agreement to promote academic collaboration and promote research in the tourism and hospitality sector, besides allowing recognition of two degree courses Has – B.Sc and M.Sc in HHA (Hospitality & Hotel Administration).

Gyan Bhushan, Senior Economic Advisor, Ministry of Tourism and CEO, NCHMCT and JNU Vice-Chancellor Shantisree Dhulipudi Pandit signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy at an event held at the Institute of Hotel Management on Thursday. , Catering & Nutrition, Pusa (IHM, Pusa) in Delhi.

There are 93 institutes under the purview of NCHMCT, and UG courses are being offered in all categories of institutes except 12 institutes in the category of food and craft institutes, which offer only diploma courses, LK Ganguly, NCHMCT Director (A&F ) and the member secretary said.

“This MoU lays emphasis on academic collaboration and will also promote research in this area. Of the 93 institutes, 21 are central IHMs, and 17 of these offer PG courses. Therefore, the students of all the institutions under NCHMCT who will enroll in UG and PG degree courses in HHA from the academic year 2023-24 will be benefitted by the MoU.

NCHMCT was established in 1982 by the Government of India India As an autonomous body for the coordinated growth and development of hospitality education in the country. It is currently located in Noida.

Earlier addressing a gathering at the event, Reddy said, “We will use this association (MoU) to work together and we will give good education and good technology and products to the students.

He also urged both the institutes to think of conducting research on ways to promote tourism.

The JNU Vice-Chancellor said that these two courses were approved “unanimously” by the Academic Council and the Executive Council of the university.

Pandit said he is “delighted to have this association” with these institutions in India under the NCHMCT.

“This is the soft power of India. And, JNU stands with the Hon’ble Minister, his Government, our dynamic Prime Minister, who believes in harnessing India’s soft power.

“We already have defense institutes, higher research institutes to whom we are awarding degrees, and at the same time we have also moved up the rankings in international rankings among universities,” said the VC of the university.

He asserted that it is “the only university that has the Prime Minister’s motto of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’… We get the best education from the poorest of the poor in India”.

“We hope to work together and through this collaboration we will benefit from each other,” Pandit said.

Why JNU is special is also because it is among the institutions in India that have produced Nobel laureates in Physics – Presidency College, Chennai, Sir CV Raman and Subramanian Chandrasekhar, and JNU – in Economics. No, this is what the IITs have done so far, he said.

Later talking to PTI, he said that this MoU will also cover “academic research, faculty exchange and sharing of best learning and practices”.

Union Tourism Secretary Arvind Singh said that both the institutes will be benefitted by this association.

Bhushan termed the occasion of signing the MoU as a “significant day, a historic day in the history of the hospitality industry in the country”.

He said that the hospitality industry is ready for a “quantum jump” and the institutes under NCHMCT are also moving forward.

“With this MoU, we will open a new vista in the areas of research and development,” Bhushan said.

NCHMCT’s Ganguly said the annual student intake of UG (three-year course) and two-year PG course in various institutes run under it is around 12,000 and 550 respectively.

Sources said efforts are on to get similar accreditation from JNU for the respective BBA and MBA courses being run at IITTM (Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM), Gwalior) and ICI (Indian Culinary Institute).
