Family members of Inayat Ahmed, who was killed along with a top Jaish commander in Naira village of Pulwama district in the early hours of Sunday, protested the police’s claim that he was a ‘hybrid terrorist’ and said he was innocent and had no links to terrorism. There is no relation.
Meanwhile, a video started going viral on social media, purportedly quoting his sister as saying that three terrorists came to her house at 10 pm on Thursday and stayed there. In the video, she says that Inayat told her sister that she would not come out and want to die along with other terrorists when civilians were being evacuated by security forces. The family went from Niara to the police control room in Srinagar to bury Inayat’s body to prove his innocence.
“He was only 17 years old. You ask anyone in the village and they will tell you that he was innocent and going about his work,” his family told reporters outside the PCR in Srinagar. They were also demanding the release of Inayat’s elder brother Naveed Ahmed. They allege that the police picked them up after the operation ended in Niara village in the early hours of Sunday.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range, Vijay Kumar had earlier told reporters that Inayat was a hybrid terrorist and was killed when he refused to come out of the targeted house where they were hiding. “His family was called to the spot to persuade him to come out, but he chose not to. The hiding terrorists also opened fire on the soldiers and in retaliation were killed after a long encounter.”
Elaborating, he said that a hybrid terrorist is not listed in the police records but acts in disguise and his ‘subversive’ activities are known through technical surveillance. “We keep looking at the data generated on their laptops and phones and thus we establish who the hybrid terrorist is,” he said. “This year, the police are focusing on eliminating foreign terrorists and going after hybrid terrorists,” he said.
The police had run into a major controversy late last year when it claimed to have killed two terrorists, a hybrid terrorist and the owner of the building, in the Hyderpora area of Srinagar. “We want his body to be handed over. His elder brother is also in police custody and should be released. The police had taken him with them during the operation last night and later asked him to move to a safer place along with other family members. But this morning, he was picked up again after the operation was over and since then he is in their custody.”
Relatives told that Inayat’s family had gone to his uncle’s place in Trisal village where his grandmother had died a few days ago. A relative said, “Only two of her sisters (one is pregnant) were at home, while other family members were in mourning at Trisal.” “We fail to understand how he was murdered,” he said.
The relatives said that in the morning they were shocked to hear that Inayat had been murdered as they had seen her at her maternal uncle’s house in the past few days.
Police and Army said in a joint briefing that five terrorists affiliated to Jaish and Lashkar were killed in Pulwama and Budgam districts. A police handout identified him as Zahid Ahmed Wani alias Uzair (a top commander), a resident of Karimabad Pulwama; Kafeel Bhari alias Chhotu, a foreign terrorist from Pakistan; Waheed Ahmed Reshi, resident of Khadermoh Kakapora and Inayat Ahmed Mir, resident of Naira Pulwama.
According to the police, Wani was a classified terrorist active since May 2017 and was involved in several terror crime cases including attacks on security forces and civilian atrocities. He was also one of the masterminds of various IED attacks, police said, adding that he was also instrumental in motivating the youth to join terror groups and other criminal activities.
Police said, Kafeel Bhai was working in Pulwama and Shopian belt and was involved in a series of terror crime cases, while Waheed Ahmed was active since 2021. Inayat Ahmed had recently joined terror groups, the police said.
Incriminating material, arms and ammunition including 01 M4 rifle, 02 AK series rifle and 02 pistol were recovered from the encounter site.
Meanwhile, another terrorist, Bilal Ahmed Khan, a resident of Chill Brass, Khansaheb, was killed at Charar-e-Sharif in Budgam district. As per police records, he was a classified terrorist and was associated with Lashkar (TRF) and was part of groups involved in several terror crime cases.
