J&K: MeT Predicts Rains With Thunderstorm In Plains, Snow Over Higher Reaches

New DelhiThe higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley received fresh snowfall on Tuesday, with areas like Gurez in north Kashmir and Sonamarg in central Kashmir again covered with a white layer of snow. Avalanche also occurred in Zojila area of ​​central Kashmir due to change in weather. The MeT department has predicted intermittent rain and thundershowers at most places in Kashmir and at isolated places in Jammu till 06 April.

The Srinagar Leh National Highway has been closed for traffic after an avalanche hit Zojila area of ​​central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. Avalanches occurred at Panimath and Kai-Pathri in Zojila Pass following fresh snowfall in the higher reaches. The government has installed machinery to clean the highway.

Fresh snowfall occurred in the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley including Gurez, Zojila and Pir Panjal ranges. The road connecting Kargil and Leh to Srinagar has been closed for traffic due to two avalanches on the Srinagar-Leh highway at Zojila Pass. Officials said that BRO teams have started the operation to clear the snow. The weather will remain like this till 6th April. People need to be careful in icy areas. Always check the condition of the highway before traveling to these areas,” said Mukhtar Ahmed, Deputy Director Meteorological Department, Kashmir.

Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was halted for some time due to several mudslides in Ramban area. The highway was cleared and traffic was restored. The MeT department has advised farmers to avoid spraying in orchards till April 6 and maintain proper drainage to drain off excess water in the fields. Meanwhile, the MeT official said Srinagar recorded a low of 6.9 degrees Celsius against the previous night’s 7.9 degrees Celsius and was 0.5 degrees Celsius above normal for the summer capital.
