Jim Whitehurst resigns as chairman of IBM in just 14 months

In a surprising development, IBM has announced that Jim Whitehurst has decided to step down as the company’s chairman, just 14 months after joining that role. Whitehurst has been instrumental in the $34 billion IBM and Red Hat integration announced in 2018.

He will continue to serve as a senior advisor to IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna.

“In the nearly three years since the acquisition was announced, Jim has been instrumental in clarifying IBM’s strategy, but also in ensuring that IBM and Red Hat work well together and that our technology platforms and Innovations provide greater value to our customers,” Krishna said in a statement late Friday.

After IBM bought Red Hat for $34 billion in 2018, Ginni Rometty stepped down as CEO and Krishna took over. Whitehurst, who had been Red Hat’s CEO, moved on to IBM as chairman.

Krishna announced that when he became CEO, Bridget van Kralingen agreed to help make sure his transition went well.

He has now decided to step down from his current role as Senior Vice President of Global Markets.

IBM also announced other changes and changes to senior management. Rob Thomas will be the Senior Vice President of Global Markets.

Tom Rosamilia will become Senior Vice President of Cloud and Cognitive Software and Rick Lewis will become Senior Vice President of Systems.
