Jharkhand woman branded as ‘witch’; brother-in-law among five arrested

Police have arrested five people in connection with the murder of a woman in Palamu district of Jharkhand.

Palamu Superintendent of Police Chandan Kumar Sinha said on Thursday that 40-year-old Surajmani Devi was killed by a group of people on Wednesday in Godramkala village of Rehla police station area.

Based on the statement of the woman’s five-year-old son Alok, a case has been registered against eight accused, police said. The SP said that out of the eight accused named in the FIR, the police arrested five on Thursday.

Police said the woman’s brother-in-law Amresh Rajwar was also involved in the crime and was arrested on Thursday. Police said that the accused caught the woman on Wednesday posing as a witch and killed her with an axe.

The five arrested persons were produced in the court from where they were sent to judicial custody for 14 days. The SP said that raids are being conducted to arrest the remaining three accused.
