Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday urged bankers to think out-of-the-box for facilitating loans to Scheduled Tribe (ST) members so that they can pursue education or start a business.

In a meeting with bank officials, the Chief Minister said, “When the state was a part of Bihar, the problem of non-availability of bank loans to the people of the Scheduled Tribe community was prevalent. This problem persists even today. Despite having land, tribals get loans from banks. We should make arrangements to ensure that ST community members can easily get loans for starting a business or for any other purpose of development.”

Hemant Soren said that the problem of debt being faced by the people of Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste community since the time of undivided Bihar can be solved by the bank management out of the box. If banks consider keeping the movable and immovable property built on the land as collateral, not the land, then the problem can be solved to the extent. Apart from this, banks need to increase the limits of collateral free loans, so that tribals can easily get loans for education, housing, business and industry. He said that the members of Scheduled Tribes constitute 28 per cent of the state’s population.

The Chief Minister said the above things while presiding over a meeting organized at Project Bhawan on Monday regarding providing loans to the Scheduled Tribes community by banks. The Chief Minister said that if the bank takes away the land of the people of the tribal community, then their very existence will be snatched away. We have to work keeping their existence safe. If the people of this community do not move forward, then how will the state progress on the path of development. Bank management should consider this. Keep these things in the meeting of the Bank Management Board. The government will provide full cooperation to the bank management. We need to work in coordination, so that all round development of this community can be ensured. Soren assured that his government would support the banks for the all round development of the community.
