Jharkhand’s forest department has given conditional permission to kill a leopard that killed four people in Garhwa and its surrounding areas of the state.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) said, in December 2022, this leopard had killed at least four people in different areas. A forest official said that a man was killed by the leopard in a field adjacent to the forest near compartment 1341 of Kunwari beat of Janakpur forest range of Manendragarh forest division. The incident is being reported around 5 pm on Sunday. The person who died has been identified as Ramdavan.

As soon as the information about the incident was received, the Forest Department team reached the spot and sent the dead body for postmortem. Teams of officers from different blocks have arrived to catch the leopard. Sarguja Wildlife Conservator of Forests KR Badhaai said that till now there have been three incidents of death including two deaths due to leopard attack in Janakpur forest range. In view of these incidents, the Forest Department installed cages and trap cameras to catch the leopard. But still failed to catch him.

He said, permission has been received from the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) to tranquilize the leopard. An expert team of doctors has also reached here and efforts are on to capture the leopard at the earliest. Recently on January 3, a woman was killed by a leopard attack.
