The Jharkhand High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to explain under what circumstances the room in the Jharkhand Assembly was allotted for offering prayers.

Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL), a division bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra and Justice Anand Sen asked the government to file an affidavit in the matter. The court said that the next hearing of the case would be on May 18.

In the PIL, it was alleged that allotting a room for prayer to members of a community was violative of fundamental rights. Equal right to religion has been violated, it was alleged.

Room TW 348 was allotted to offer prayers in September 2021, leading to protests by the opposition BJP, which demanded a Hanuman temple in the assembly premises.
