Overall, it was a typical JEE (Main) paper of moderate difficulty level, which could be solved comfortably by good students in the stipulated time, but according to experts, average students found it a bit difficult.

The first shift exam of JEE Main 2023, held on January 30, was of easy to moderate level. Ajay Sharma, National Academic Director (Engineering), Aakash BYJU’S, said that there were some good questions scattered here and there in the three subjects, which made the paper a bit difficult. Most of the students said that Physics part was the easiest, while Chemistry was of easy to moderate level.

The students further claimed that Mathematics was moderate. Sharma said, “Chemistry was memory-based, while maths was calculative, but students were able to complete the paper in a given time.” time by good students but average students found it a bit difficult, he said.

Physics questions were set from all the subjects. Students were tested on a simple level of applicability of the concepts. Direct formula based questions were asked. Three questions were from Thermodynamics, one from Electrostatics, one from Optics, two from Magnetism, and two to three questions from Modern Physics were reported by the students.

Chemistry paper was balanced. Students observed that the physical portion was less as compared to organic and inorganic chemistry. Most of the questions in Physical Chemistry were of integer type. The chapters like p-block, d-block and coordination chemistry had more weightage in the paper. The entire paper was mostly NCERT based. Questions were asked from Chemistry in Everyday Life, GOCs, Aldehydes, Ketones, Environmental Chemistry and Polymers.

The Mathematics part was concept based but moderate. The mainstay of the paper was 6 to 7 questions from Calculus. There were two questions from Algebra, two questions from Integration, one question from Differential Equations, two questions from Coordinate Geometry and three questions from Vector & 3D Geometry. Sharma said that there were some good questions in the paper as well, which required a lot of thought from the students to solve.
