Jaya Bachchan once talked about her family’s reaction to her decision to marry Amitabh Bachchan. The couple has been married for five decades now.

Jaya Bachchan turned 75 on Sunday. The veteran actress, who stunned everyone with her stellar performances in classics like Abhiman, Guddi, Mili, and Silsila, continues to make headlines for her peerless grace and bold demeanor. Apart from her work in industry and politics, Jaya often grabs headlines for her marriage with Amitabh Bachchan. While we have seen the couple’s wedding pictures often go viral on social media, an old interview of her talking about getting her parents’ approval for the marriage has now caught our attention.

Speaking with India Today in 2012, Jaya Bachchan revealed that while her mother Indira was in love with Amitabh, her father Tarun Kumar Bhaduri felt that marriage could wait a while, before Jaya could settle down First you should let your career progress a little further.

“His parents used to love me. They wanted to see her marry and settle down. I was shooting for Naya Din Nayi Raat in Madras when he called to tell me that he had spoken to his parents about marrying me. His father was overjoyed,” she told the publication at the time.

Seeing his happiness, his mother wept with joy. As for my own mother, she was already very fond of him. On the other hand, my father felt that maybe we should wait a bit so that I can pursue my career a little further. He said, ‘I hope you both know what you are doing, but if you make up your mind, I have no objection.’ Zanjeer had released in May and we were husband and wife till June 4.”

In the same interview, the veteran actress talked about Amitabh’s love language. She said that Amitabh used to buy her expensive sarees, mostly white ones with purple borders. She confessed that purple color does not suit her, but she will wear them so as not to hurt the actor. “It was nice to be with Amit, I always wanted to be with him. In my view, he could have done no wrong,” she said.

Jaya Bachchan is all set to make a comeback to acting this year. She will be seen playing a pivotal role in Rocky and Rani’s love story directed by Karan Johar. Ranveer Singh in the film Alia Bhatt With Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi also playing the lead roles.
