A day before the last day of filing nominations for the first phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) is grappling with candidates issues in three seats, including its traditional seat of Siwalkhas, where Jat- Muslims are fault lines. Despite all the efforts of the party, the merger again took place.
The party has been forced to change its candidate for Chhaprauli in Baghpat district after protests by the local people. Its Jewar candidate and big-ticket Avtar Singh Bhadana withdrew from the assembly seat on Thursday. Now there is a demand to replace the SP-RLD candidate from Siwalkhas seat of Baghpat.
The party cadre is camping at RLD chief Jayant Choudhary’s house in Delhi to field a Jat ticket instead of SP candidate and former MLA Ghulam Mohammad. It is also highlighting the Jat-Muslim rift in Baghpat, when the RLD had campaigned over the past six months to unite the two communities through ‘Bhaichara Sammelan’ (Brotherhood Summit).
Siwalkhas has been the traditional seat for RLD, from where Jayant Chaudhary’s grandfather Charan Singh was elected MLA thrice, but this time the seat went to the SP. Ghulam Mohammad is a former MLA of SP, who won from Siwalkhas seat in 2012. Due to this the RLD cadre is complaining that the case of a Jat leader has been ignored here. The party leaders asked Chowdhary not to follow the ‘gathbandhan dharma’ for the larger reason of keeping the Jat vote together and change the candidate as was done for Chhaprauli seat.
The Jat Mahasabha has said that if a Jat does not get a ticket, it will not support the SP-RLD. RLD on Wednesday changed its Chhaprauli candidate from Veerpal Rathi to Ajay Kumar after a cadre sit-in at Chaudhary’s house. The RLD cadre is now citing this example to propel Choudhary to be the RJD candidate from Siwalkhas seat.
