Jasprit Bumrah Is Ready For Team India’s Test Captaincy

Jasprit Bumrah will play his first Test in India since March 2022, when he faces England in Hyderabad on Thursday. Bumrah will play his 11th Test against England; the last time he faced them, he was captain of the Indian side. The ace fast bowler, who is vice-captain of the Indian Test squad, led the team in the postponed fifth Test at Edgbaston after regular skipper Rohit Sharma contracted COVID-19.

While India lost the match, the visitors led for much of it before Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow gave them a rough welcome to Bazball, hitting undefeated centuries in a 269-run stand in only 316 balls. Bumrah took five wickets in that match and scored an unbeaten 31 in 16 balls during the first Indian innings. 29 of those runs came in a single over off Stuart Broad, pushing him over West Indies legend Brian Lara for the most runs scored by a batter in a single over of a Test match. Broad conceded 35 runs in that over, which was the most expensive in the format’s history.

Bumrah Ready For Test Captaincy

It was a remarkable game, and Bumrah has stated that if given the chance, he would not hesitate to take over as India’s regular Test captain.

The Guardian quoted Bumrah as stating, “I did one game, and it was the utmost honour.” Playing Test cricket is fantastic; captaining is even better. We lost, but we were ahead in the match, and I enjoyed the responsibility. As a fast bowler, you might move down to fine leg and switch off, but I like being involved in every decision, right in the heart of it. And, given the chance, who wouldn’t? Fast bowlers are smart.

It is uncommon for fast bowlers to become effective captains, especially in Test cricket, but one of Bumrah’s contemporaries offers an excellent example. Pat Cummins, widely regarded as one of the best fast bowlers in the world across formats, led Australia to victory in the World Test Championship and the World Cup last year, in addition to retaining the Ashes in England. Bumrah stated that the number of matches Australia plays may fluctuate, but Cummins is an excellent example.
