Jasprit Bumrah has missed a lot of cricket in recent times including the 2022 T20 World Cup due to a back injury.

Veteran Australian fast bowler Jeff Thomson believes that the hectic schedule in recent times will force players to decide whether they want to play one format or all. In recent times, many star players have already dropped one or two formats to manage their workload and increase their longevity in the game. Ben Stokes recently announced his retirement from ODIs to focus on Tests and T20Is, while India All-rounder Hardik Pandya has not played any Test match for a long time.

Thomson, who claimed to have taken 200 Test wickets, suggested that during his era players knew they were going to get a break from cricket, but players in recent times have busier schedules.

“There is so much cricket. They play throughout the year. We didn’t do that. We used to play weather, summer weather. Sometimes we used to go to England for our winters. It was a long tour, four and a half months. But normally we only played in the summer so we would build up slowly after Christmas was over. Because I knew I was going to get rest,” Thomson said on Revsportz.

He also pointed out how the rest time has changed for players to manage their workload, which was not the case during his time as he did not play cricket for a full 12 months.

“Now, you can’t do that. So you have to pace yourself to be around. That’s why they have all the back-up bowlers and they rest guys. In our day we didn’t rest. If we rested Somebody else would have taken our place. It is a matter of taking it easy these days as it is a 12 months job in a year.

Recently, India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has missed a lot of cricket following a back injury. He has been an all-format player for India for the last 4-5 years as the team management and selectors often give him ample rest for bilateral series from time to time, but his recent injury has once again put him in question. Thomson feels that Bumrah may have to decide whether he wants to play all formats or stay out of one to extend his age.

“Well, (Bumrah) has to work out whether he wants to play, shorter formats or Test matches or both. If I think that if I was playing now, it would have been very difficult for me to play Test matches. Especially, when you get so much money in the short version of the game which improves your longevity. We didn’t have to think about money in our days because there was no money. Now it is huge business. The only one who is going to take care of you is yourself. So, you have to work out how long I am going to play and how am I going to manage it because nobody else is going to play. I think these days you have to be more clever in terms of workload and see what you have to play. If you are good enough, they are going to pick you anyhow, so you have to be able to pull the strings,” he said.

“I think it is the crowd that decides it. They know how good he is. If he doesn’t want to play Test cricket then it is a bit of a shock but if he plays T20s they will come to see him. I What I am telling you is that if a player limits himself to this, he will continue to play for a long time.
