Japanese PM Evacuated After Blast During His Speech

New Delhi: A massive explosion rocked a western Japanese port during a visit by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, but no one was injured, news agency PTI reported. Kishida was on his way to the port of Sakazaki in Wakayama Prefecture to cheer on his ruling party’s candidate in a local election.

PTI quoted NHK as saying that just before his speech was to begin, there was an explosion. A suspect was grabbed from the scene, and NHK footage showed several uniformed and plainclothes police officers gathering around the man and pinning him to the ground.

An apparent ‘smoke bomb’ was hurled at the PM ahead of his scheduled speech at Sakazaki port in Wakayama Prefecture, news agency IANS quoted local media Kyodo News as saying.

The prime minister was campaigning for a by-election to the lower house of the Wakayama No. 1 district. Nine months earlier, Kishida’s predecessor Shinzo Abe was assassinated while giving a campaign speech.

Assassination of Shinzo Abe

Shinzo Abe, 67, was shot in the back while giving a campaign speech in Nara, western Japan. He was taken to the hospital but he was not breathing and his heart had stopped. He was later declared brought dead at the hospital. Abe was Japan’s longest-serving leader before stepping down in 2020 for health reasons.

Shinzo was speaking at an event in the city of Nara at 11:30 a.m. local time in Japan. At the same time the attacker fired. Japan’s longest serving Prime Minister Shinzo Abe collapses to the ground. He was admitted to the hospital in a bloody condition. The killer was immediately arrested.

There is a wave of mourning in the whole world due to the deadly attack in Nara city of Japan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the death of ‘dear friend’ Shinzo Abe. Modi announced a day of national mourning on Saturday on the death of the former Japanese prime minister. The Prime Minister announced this on Twitter after Shinzo’s death.
