Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police on Saturday (March 5) said that the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been blocked at Panthyal due to stone pelting.

The Union Territory’s traffic police said evacuation work is still on and the highway has been closed for vehicular movement. Earlier this week, on Thursday (March 3), the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was blocked due to a landslide.

The movement of vehicles was stopped on the highway in Shabnabas Banihal.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that a Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lies over Jammu and neighboring lower and middle troposphere levels.

“The Western Disturbance is very likely to affect the Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains from the night of March 5,” the IMD said in a statement.

The National Weather Forecasting Agency has also predicted isolated light rain/snowfall or lightning over the Western Himalayan region on March 4 and 5.

The IMD has said that widespread light/moderate rainfall/snowfall is very likely to occur over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan region on 6th and 7th March with isolated thunderstorm/lightning.

“There is a possibility of heavy rain in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad also on March 6,” it said.

The highway is the lifeline of the Kashmir Valley and the main road connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country.

Trucks headed to Kashmir carrying essential supplies and other vehicles pass through the highway.
