Jamia Takes ‘strict Action’ Against 15 Students for Last Year’s Scuffle, 3 Expelled

Jamia Millia Islamia has taken strong action against 15 students, including expelling three, who were involved in a scuffle between two groups last September that resulted in a student being shot, officials said.

A senior university official said the punishment includes expulsion, campus ban, denial of hostel accommodation and monetary compensation for submission of good conduct bond depending on the student’s participation.

The official said that three of the 15 students have been allowed to take the exam with only a campus restriction of 5 years and have not been admitted to any other course in the university after the completion of their course.

“The disciplinary action has been taken following due process and an example has been set that the university will not tolerate any form of indiscipline on campus,” said Nazim Hussain Al Jafri, registrar of Jamia.

The students who have been expelled have been identified as Mujibur Rahman, BA (Hons) Political Science; Salman Khurshid, BA Programme; and Mohd. Faisal, MA (Social Boycott), is accused of disturbing the peaceful atmosphere of the university and inciting students to fight, officials said.

The notices issued to Rahman and Khurshid on April 24 state that they did not appear before the disciplinary committee to defend their case. The notice given to Faesal mentioned that “the committee took note of the activities carried out by him during the period of suspension and premises restriction”.

Rehman and Khurshid could not be contacted despite repeated attempts, but Faisal declined to comment on the matter.

In September last year, two groups of students had clashed several times inside and outside the campus. In the brawl at the hospital, a student was injured by a bullet.

The Committee in its meetings held on April 6, 2023 at Mir Anees Hall, Administrative Block and later on April 10 in the Committee Room, Registrar’s Office took a serious note of the “involvement” in the name of these students. The regional conflict resulted in a series of fights between students from western UP and Mewat region on the university campus and Holy Family Hospital on September 29,” according to the notice given to each student.

Show cause notices were given to the students. The committee held several meetings and hearings and then decided to punish the students.”

According to officials, out of 15, five students of Diploma in Electrical Engineering – Suhail Nasrullah Ansari, Mohd Shadab Choudhary, Sahil and Nazim Khan – have been allowed to complete their course and the suspension against them has been revoked, but they will be allowed to attend the university. will be banned from campus for a period of five years after the completion of their courses.

These five students will not be allowed to stay in the hostel and have also been issued warning letters.

Meanwhile, Momin Khan, Abdul Hannan, MA (Development Extension) and Asif Ali, MA History Semester II, pursuing Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, have been asked to pay Rs 1,000 each as fine. The three students, including Abrar Ahmed, Diploma in Electrical Engineering, will not be provided hostel accommodation in the university during the remaining period of their current course and will have to submit a bond of good conduct at the proctor’s office.

Police had registered two cases and arrested nine people in connection with the incident of scuffle and firing involving Jamia students at Holy Family Hospital in southeast Delhi.
