CUET was introduced last year by the UGC for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. However, Jamia has not adopted CUET for all its UG, PG courses

Jamia Millia Islamia has no plans to implement the Common University Entrance Test for admission to all its undergraduate and postgraduate courses and will conduct its own admissions to “ensure timely admissions” for the upcoming academic session, an official said. Will stick to the exams.

CUET was introduced last year by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. However, JMI has not adopted CUET for all its undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

While last year, the university opted for CUET to admit students in 10 undergraduate programmes, this year the number is likely to increase.

Jamia’s Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar said, ‘Like last year, this year also we will take admission in many courses through CUET. Last year there were 10 courses, but now the number will increase. According to Jamia’s website, the university offers 62 undergraduate courses and 72 master’s programmes.

A senior official told PTI that the Academic Council has recently decided that the university should adopt CUET for admission to some UG courses like last year.

The official said the matter would be presented before the Executive Council, which is the highest decision-making body of the university. The UGC had announced in March last year that undergraduate admissions in all central universities would be conducted through a common entrance test and not on the basis of class 12 marks.

Responding to the UGC directive, Akhtar said, “The university will look into it.” The decision on the syllabus for CUET will be taken in a meeting of the Deans of Faculties under the chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor as per the minutes of the Academic Council meeting held recently.

During the meeting, it was also decided that admission to courses run by regulatory bodies would be done through prescribed testing agencies such as JEE, NEET and others as per the approved practice.

“After due deliberation on the matter, the House (Council) decided that the University should allot some of the UG and PG courses to CUET as per last year’s practice and to ensure timely admissions, all the remaining courses should hold its entrance test for the same,” read the minutes accessed by PTI.

“The decision on allocation of courses to CUET will be taken in a meeting of Deans of Faculties chaired by the Vice-Chancellor,” the minutes said.

Major Central Universities of the national capital have partially or fully adopted CUET for admission to undergraduate courses in the academic session 2022-23. More than 14 lakh candidates appeared for CUET in the first edition of the exam.

UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar had announced in May last year that CUET for PG admissions would be introduced in the 2022 academic session. However, he added that unlike CUET-UG, CUET-PG will not be mandatory for Central Universities.
