Jallikattu 2023: Bull Tamer Dead, Over 70 Others Injured in Dangerous Sport in Madurai; Participation Continues Undeterred

Around 800 bulls will be released from the Vadivasala (entry point) of Palamedu, where 335 tamars participated on Monday.

As Jallikattu was seen embracing the sport in some parts of the state of Tamil Nadu, several bull tamers and owners were injured during the dangerous sport. In Madurai, where the sport is mainly played, a bull named Aravindaraj was seriously injured while participating in Palemedu and later died. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but could not survive from his injuries.

A PTI report said that at least 75 people, including bull handlers and owners, were injured during the Jallikattu bull-taming sport held in Avaniyapuram. Another 18 were injured in the ongoing event at Palamedu on Monday.

Despite this, the bull tamers were seen participating in the sport with an indomitable spirit. Palamedu Jallikattu is the second high-profile competition in the district.

In the same area, about 10 youths were trampled by a bull, who came close to catching the hump in the hope of demonstrating their prowess. Instead the animal shook them off and tossed them around and escaped capture. The bull was declared the winner and earned four grams of gold as a prize for its owner.

In another horrifying incident, a bull owner who was walking out of the arena in Palamedu with a plastic chair gifted to him, had to hold on to the chair to save himself from a ferocious bull that tried to kill him .

Monday was the second day of Jallikattu at Avaniyapuram. The first day also coincided with Pongal, a harvest festival celebrated mainly in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

737 bulls were released at Avaniyapuram Bull Taming Sport event which saw participation of 257 bulls who had provided RT-PCR negative report and also a certificate that they were fully vaccinated against COVID-19 .
