The World Health Organization (WHO) has released an emergency use list for India’s indigenous vaccine Covaxin, adding to the growing portfolio of WHO-validated vaccines for the prevention of COVID-19.
The WHO said in a tweet that the Technical Advisory Group convened by the World Health Organization (WHO) has determined that the Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech COVID-19 The vaccine meets WHO standards for protection against COVID-19.
“WHO has granted Emergency Use List (EUL) to COVAXIN® (developed by Bharat Biotech), adding to the growing portfolio of WHO validated vaccines for the prevention of #COVID19,” WHO said in a tweet.
“The Technical Advisory Group, convened by WHO and composed of regulatory experts from around the world, has determined that the Covaccine vaccine meets WHO standards for protection against #COVID19, that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks and that the use of the vaccine can be done,” it added.
The global health body said the Covaxin vaccine was also reviewed by the WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE), and recommended the vaccine be used in two doses, with a four-week dosing interval, all In age groups 18 and above.
“Available data on vaccination of pregnant women are insufficient to assess vaccine safety or efficacy in pregnancy; studies in pregnant women are planned, including the Pregnancy Sub-Study and the Pregnancy Registry,” the WHO said.
