Jaishankar to file Rajya Sabha nomination from Gandhinagar today

The Election Commission of India announced that voting for 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Goa, Gujarat and West Bengal will be held on 24 July.

The EC also informed that 10 members from Goa and West Bengal are retiring in July and August.

The seats falling vacant due to retirement of members in Rajya Sabha include Derek O’Brien from West Bengal and S Jaishankar from Gujarat. Elections will be held on one Rajya Sabha seat from Goa as Vinay D. Tendulkar is due to retire on July 28.

July 24 count

The Election Commission further informed that July 13 is the last date for filing nominations for the vacant Rajya Sabha seats. The counting of votes will also take place on July 24.

According to an official statement, three Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat will go to polls as Dineshchandra Jemalbhai Anavadiya, Lokhandwala Jugalsinh Mathurji, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar Krishnaswamy will retire on August 18.

S Jaishankar was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat in 2019 and took oath as a member of the Upper House. The Union minister got 104 votes, while his Congress rival Gaurav Pandya got 70 votes.

Two seats fell vacant from Gujarat after Union ministers Amit Shah and Smriti Irani were elected to the Lok Sabha in the recent national elections.

The BJP has a strength of 156 in the 182-seat Gujarat Assembly.

Six Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal will also go to polls as Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Derek O’Brien, Pradip Bhattacharya, Sushmita Dev, Dola Sen, Shanta Chhetri are set to retire on August 18.
