The SUV segment has become quite popular, not just in India, but globally too. Auto manufacturers are witnessing exponential sales growth in this segment and even the small car segment has been witnessing the introduction of the SUV body style over the last few years.

1. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

Maruti Suzuki is set to launch the new Grand Vitara in India soon. The new Grand Vitara shares its underpinnings with the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and is a direct rival to the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun, among other similarly priced SUVs.
Based on Suzuki’s Global-C platform, the Grand Vitara will be retailed through Maruti Suzuki’s premium Nexa dealership chain. Even though the Maruti Suzuki SUV has a lot in common with Toyota’s Urban Cruiser Hyryder, the design of the Grand Vitara is unique. It gets the “NEXwave” grille up front, flanked by split LED headlamps. At the rear, the SUV gets sleek looking LED tail lights that run across the width of the tailgate.
Powering the new Grand Vitara SUV is Maruti Suzuki’s 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech; as well as a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with strong-hybrid tech, borrowed from the Toyota Hyryder. While the former puts out 103 PS power and 137 Nm and has a 21.11 kmpl claimed efficiency, the latter has a max power and torque output of 116 PS and 122 Nm respectively and is claimed to boast a best-in-class fuel efficiency of 27.97 kmpl.
The 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech can be had with either a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 6-speed AT with paddle shifters. The 5MT version also gets Suzuki’s ALLGRIP all-wheel drive configuration with Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock drive modes. On the other hand, the strong-hybrid (Intelligent Electric Hybrid) variants can only be had with an e-CVT that powers the front wheels. The drive modes on offer with the strong-hybrid version include EV, Eco, Power and Normal.
Pricing for the Grand Vitara is yet to be announced, but we expect it to start from around Rs 9.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
2. Hyundai Venue N-Line
Hyundai India recently announced that it will launch the new Venue on 6th September. The company has already commenced the bookings for the new Hyundai Venue N-Line at an initial amount of Rs 21,000. Customers can book the SUV at the official website or their nearest Hyundai dealership.

The new Hyundai Venue N-Line will receive tweaked headlights and tail lights and a redesigned front fascia with tweaked bumpers. The SUV will also get red inserts on the doors, roof rails, bumpers and a dark chrome grille.
The SUV also features newly designed 16-inch alloy wheels with red brake callipers. The rear profile is flanked by dual exhaust tips and a new spoiler. The SUV will be available in three colour options – Thunder Blue, Shadow Grey and Polar White exterior paint with a black roof.
Talking about the engine, the SUV will be powered by a 1.0-litre GDi turbocharged petrol engine which produces 118 bhp power and 172 Nm torque. The engine comes mated to a 7-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission.
3. 2022 Hyundai Kona
Launched in July 2019, the Hyundai Kona Electric was the first electric vehicle in India from Hyundai. Globally the Hyundai Kona electric was updated in 2020 and this model is expected to come to our shores sometime in 2022.

The Hyundai Kona is expected to be powered by a 39.2kWh battery and a 136hp motor for a 304km range or a 64kWh battery and a 204hp motor for a 483km range. The electric SUV is expected to be priced at around Rs 24-26 lakhs.
4. Toyota Urban Crusier Hyryder
Toyota Hyryder SUV was unveiled in India on July 1st. The company announced that it will launch the SUV on August 16, 2022. The brand also commenced the bookings of the Hyryder SUV at Rs 25,000 across all Toyota dealerships in India.

The Hyryder is based on Suzuki’s Global C platform that underpins the new Grand Vitara. The Hyryder SUV will be manufactured alongside the Grand Vitara at the Bidadi plant in Karnataka.
In terms of exterior, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder will boast a muscular bonnet, Glanza-like front grille and split LED DRLs with a thin chrome strip and a large air dam. The SUV gets 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, a hybrid badge on the front door, body cladding with skid plates and wraparound LED tail lamps.
The interior comes equipped with Toyota i-Connect’s 55+ features, smartwatch connectivity, a 9-inch SmartPlay cast infotainment system, voice control, remote A/C on and off, remote vehicle recognition, vehicle health and more. Moreover, the Hyryder SUV cabin also gets a dual-tone finish on the dashboard, wireless charging, a HUD, and a panoramic sunroof.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder will be available in two powertrain options- Neo Drive and a self-charging strong hybrid electric powertrain which will use a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 105 hp and 122 Nm, along with the motor’s 59 kW and 141 Nm. The combined power output will be 85 kW (114 hp). The Neo Drive engine gets an All-Wheel-Drive system, an optional 5-speed manual transmission, and a 6-speed automatic transmission to choose from.
We expect Toyota to price the Hyryder starting from Rs 10.5 lakh (ex-showroom). When launched, the SUV competes with Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, MG Astor and Mahindra Scorpio-N.
5. Mahindra XUV 300 facelift
Mahindra & Mahindra recently released a teaser of the upcoming 2022 XUV300.
The teaser reveals 2022 XUV300’s front fascia, confirming that the SUV will now be equipped with Mahindra’s new twin-peaks logo, just like the XUV700, Scorpio-N, and Scorpio Classic. Apart from that, the new XUV300 will also feature newly designed 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.
The updated XUV300 facelift could be equipped with a new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine that puts out 130 PS of maximum power and 230 Nm of peak torque.
Also on offer will likely be the same 1.5-litre diesel engine as before, which produces 115 PS power and 300 Nm torque.
Transmission options are expected to include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AMT with both engines.
When launched, the XUV 300 will continue to rival the likes of Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Nissan Magnite, Toyota Urban Cruiser as well as the Renault Kiger.
