‘It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you end’: Gautam Gambhir’s advice to Suryakumar Yadav

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir gave a valuable piece of advice to flamboyant batsman Suryakumar Yadav as he wants him to finish the game. Suryakumar played a key role in India’s five-wicket win over New Zealand in the first T20I in Jaipur on Wednesday. The middle-order batsman put on 62 runs to lay the foundation for the win, however, he failed to finish things off and was dismissed in the 15th over, leading to a mini-collapse as India lost three wickets early. .

The Men in Blue managed to register a win in the last over but Gambhir wants India to play ruthless cricket when they are in a position to dominate the opposition.

“You have to finish more strongly because you have to be more brutal with the batting unit to chase down such a target. Professionalism isn’t just about passing or getting these runs off the second last ball. When you’re in a position where you can completely crush your opponents, go out and be ruthless. This is the attitude India needs for the next 11 months and that is what will define them when they go into big tournaments against strong sides,” Gambhir said on Star Sports after the match.

The veteran opener further added that Suryakumar needs to finish the game to be the most important part of the team.

“Very disappointed. Look, although I really admire him for his batting, he needs to finish these games. It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you start.” How do you finish. It doesn’t matter if you’ve scored 60, 70 or 80, if you can score the last, you’re the most important part of the team.”

Suryakumar was adjudged the man of the match for his valuable contribution with the bat, however, it was Rishabh Pant who completed the task by scoring the winning runs for India.

Gambhir feels it is maturity to stay not-out after playing such a good innings as he claims Pant’s finish was more important for India than Suriya’s knock in the first T20I.

“Rishabh Pant finishing the game was more important than Suriya scoring 62 as the last run is the hardest to score. So when he was in that position where he could have scored an unbeaten 70, 80 to win the match, that’s maturity. You not only mature by scoring runs but you mature by finishing the game in such a scenario.”
