‘It’s a Lie’: NCERT Chief Clarifies Amid Backlash Over Dropping Chapters on Mughals from History Book

NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani said last year due to Covid-19 there was a rationalization process in which experts recommended dropping some chapters to reduce the load.

Amid controversy over the reported decision of the National Council of Educational Research and Training to drop chapters on Mughal history, the NCERT has clarified that chapters on the Mughals have not been dropped.

In its revised syllabus of Class 12 History textbooks, the NCERT has removed some chapters on the Mughal Empire. From Class 12 History book – ‘Topics of Indian History-Part II’, Chapters related to ‘Kings and History’; The Mughal court (c. 16th and 17th centuries)’ has been removed.

NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani said that last year due to Kovid-19 the rationalization process took place.

“This is a lie. (Chapter) Mughals has not been dropped. Last year there was a rationalization process as there was pressure on students everywhere due to COVID… Expert committees examined books of classes 6-12. They suggested that if this chapter is deleted, it will not affect the knowledge of the children and an unnecessary burden will be removed…the debate is unnecessary. The head of the educational institution said that NCERT is working according to the National Education Policy 2020. “It is a transition phase. NEP 2020 talks about reducing the content load. We are implementing it. NCF (National Curriculum Framework) is being prepared for school education, it will be finalized soon. According to NEP textbooks will be printed in 2024. We haven’t dropped anything yet.”

The recent change in textbooks will be applicable to all schools following the NCERT syllabus across the country. According to NCERT, all the changes will be implemented from the new academic session 2003-04. The council is also planning to remove some poems and passages from Hindi textbooks.

Apart from History and Hindi textbooks, the NCERT has also revised the Class 12 Civics textbook. Two chapters – ‘American Hegemony in World Politics’ and ‘The Cold War Era’ have also been removed from the syllabus.

Along with 12th, NCERT has also made some changes in the books of 10th and 11th. Chapters like ‘Democracy and Diversity’, ‘Challenges of Democracy’ and ‘Popular Struggles and Movements’ have been dropped from the Class 10 – Democratic Politics-2 textbook. While chapters like ‘Central Islamic Lands’, ‘Industrial Revolution’ and ‘Clash of Cultures’ have been dropped from the Class 11 textbook – Themes in World History.
