Itinerant director Chloe Zhao’s Marvel film Eternal to see Diwali release

Eternal, the much-loved action-adventure film by Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is all set to hit the screens in India on November 5 as it gears up for its Diwali release. Eternal will release in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

Chloe Zhao, who won several honors such as the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Director for Nomad, is directing the film. Eternal is his fourth film as a director. His other credits include Songs My Brothers Taught Me and Rider.

The film, which is intended to be the 26th film in the MCU, stars Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Leah McHugh, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, Angelina Jolie and Kit Harington. The story spanning thousands of years depicts a group of immortal heroes who are forced to regroup against mankind’s oldest enemy, the Deviants.

Not only is the visual spectacle it offers, Eternals is also being hailed as one of the most diverse films ever made from the MCU. Earlier, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige emphasized the growing diversity in its cinematic universe and it seems like the first step in the right direction. For example, Salma Hayek plays a superhero in Eternal. She may have been the first woman to wear a suit in her 50s. Kumail had earlier shared that one scene featured his character along with 50 other South Asian actors in a Bollywood dance sequence. A glimpse of this has also been shared in the trailer of Eternal. Kumail shared that he was happy to do that particular scene. He said it had a “strong sense of representation”.

The Asian region is one of the largest revenue markets for Marvel films and with Chloe Zhao directing Eternal, she has become the first South Asian to direct an MCU film.
