It rains in Goa, IMD issues red alert for ‘extremely heavy rain’

Panaji: Incessant rain continued in Goa for the third consecutive day on Friday (July 8, 2022), disrupting normal life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), which issued a red alert for the coastal state warning of “extremely heavy rainfall”, said rain is likely to continue for the next five days.

The Meteorological Department said in the evening, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall was observed at most places, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over the state of Goa.” The body of a senior citizen, identified as Gajanan Padiyar, was shifted to the crematorium. From Padi village on Friday with the help of Fire and Emergency Services.

Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Desai said that Padiyar had died at home on Thursday but the body could not be taken for cremation as the village was flooded with water. Several roads and low-lying areas in the state have also been flooded.

The road connecting Canacona to Margao town in South Goa district was submerged, disrupting vehicular movement.

The roof of a high school building was blown away by strong winds at Chinchim village in South Goa district on Thursday midnight.

The IMD said that the rain activity is likely to increase in the state for the next five days.

“In addition to rain, gusty winds gusting to about 50 kmph may also occur,” it said.

It said that in view of the rising water level in reservoirs and rivers, caution should be exercised in areas prone to landslides and floods.
