It rained in Delhi; Snowfall in Kashmir, Himachal and Sikkim. IMD predicts rain in these areas

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday forecast rain in North West, Central and East India in the next 3-4 days as Delhi received light rain and Kashmir and Sikkim experienced moderate to heavy snowfall.

Light rain lashed several parts of the national capital on Sunday evening with the day’s maximum temperature at 21.4 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity was recorded at 80 per cent at 5.30 pm and the minimum temperature was recorded at 9.8 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal.

A Western Disturbance, a cyclonic circulation over East Afghanistan and adjoining Pakistan, is likely to influence the Cyclonic Circulation over Southwest Rajasthan and its adjoining areas at lower troposphere levels.

“Light to moderate scattered rain/snow very likely over Western Himalayan region till December 28, isolated to very scattered very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Rajasthan till December 28, and scattered to fairly widespread Is. Uttar Pradesh during December 27 to 29,” said the IMD forecast.

There is also a possibility of dust storm, lightning and hailstorm in western Uttar Pradesh on December 28. Apart from this, light to moderate rain is very likely to occur over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha. , and Gangetic West Bengal on 28 and 29 December.

It further said that the minimum temperature in many parts of North West and adjoining Central India and East India is 2-4 degrees Celsius above the normal average. These are close to normal in the rest of central India.

Kashmir’s ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’

Officials said that most places in Kashmir recorded the minimum temperature below the freezing point, while the Met Office has predicted light to moderate snowfall at widespread places for two days from Sunday. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday night, down from 1.7 degrees Celsius the previous night.

The Meteorological Department has said that there is a possibility of rain and snow in two days from Sunday. Light to moderate snowfall is very likely at isolated places from Sunday evening to Monday morning.

The Kashmir Valley is currently in the grip of the harshest winter period of 40 days, known as ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’, which began on Tuesday. ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’ is a time when a cold wave hits the region and the temperature drops drastically, freezing the famous Dal Lake here and water supply lines in many parts of the valley. The chances of snowfall are highest and maximum during this period and heavy to very heavy snowfall occurs in most of the regions, especially in the high altitude areas. ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’ will end on January 31, but even after that, 20 days long ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (little cold) and 10 days long ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) in Kashmir.

Sikkim

Hundreds of tourists were trapped near Changu Lake in Sikkim due to heavy snowfall, prompting the Army to launch a rescue operation, officials said on Sunday. Hundreds of tourists got stuck near Changu Lake due to the closure of Jawaharlal Nehru Road due to heavy snowfall on Saturday, he said.

Officials said the army rescued them and took shelter in their camp in the area during the night. Officials said the tourists were divided into small groups on Sunday morning as the weather improved slightly and army personnel were guiding them to reach Gangtok, about 40 km away, on foot.

The rescue operation, which was on till the final reports were received, is likely to continue till Monday as hundreds of tourists were visiting Songmo or Changu Lake near India’s border with China during the Christmas holidays. Officials said that among the stranded were around 250 people from different districts of West Bengal, including Kolkata.
